A Winning Season for Team Recycling!
Over 14,000 pounds of materials recycled at CU home games,
conserving
31 trees and 18,000 gallons of water
Although the Buffaloes were sacked a few times in the 2003 CU
Football season, and there won’t be a bowl game this year,
CU Recycling scored a touchdown by recovering more than 14,102
pounds of recyclables from six home games and the CU-CSU showdown
at Mile High – a record of amount of recovered materials
at football games. With increased effort and a strong game plan,
CU Recycling rushed to cover tailgaters, fans, concessionaires,
entrance gates and high traffic areas before the first kick-off
each game day. The success of the program can be attributed to
more efficient collection, visible recycling locations at tailgate
areas and entrance gates, and a greater participation by fans and
concessionaires.
CU Recycling's special events manager Scott Davis said there
was good participation for recycling this year. “We will do some
off season planning to continue to increase our efforts and hope
for even greater participation to make next season a winner, too.
All in all, we are very pleased that our efforts were able to make
such an environmental impact.”
The special events teams intercepted 8,940 pounds of co-mingled
containers and 5,162 pounds of corrugated cardboard, collecting
an average of 2,000 pounds of materials at each home game, including
a record 2,817 pounds collected by CU Recycling at the September
8 UCLA game. By blocking this much material from the waste stream,
CU Recycling’s efforts at the 2003 football season conserved
the following resources:
- 31 forty-foot Douglas fir trees
- 18,000 gallons of water
- 155 pounds of air pollutants
- 10,500 kilowatt hours of electricity
- 21 cubic yards of
landfill space
- 1,700 gallons of gasoline
Thank you to all Buff fans for a great
job of recycling this football season!
