1. *************** CU Recycling Report ***************
This Friday, November 15, is AMERICA RECYCLES DAY! Stop by CU
Recycling’s table in the University Memorial Center from 10 am to 2
pm on Friday to answer recycling trivia questions and pick up a free
eco-flyer (frisbee made of recycled materials!)
Celebrate America Recycles Day everyday at CU by remembering to
close the loop and buy recycled. Now is a great time to give
recycled paper a try. Doing so is environmentally responsible and
economically feasible. The Distribution Center, Imaging Services
and the CU Bookstore all stock high quality recycled paper for your
copy, printing and office supply needs.
The COLORADO MATERIALS EXCHANGE (COMEx), administered by CU
Recycling, is conducting workshops on computer reuse throughout the
state of Colorado. COMEx Program Coordinator Colby Graham and CU
Recycling Director Jack DeBell will host town meetings in Colorado
Springs, Greeley, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, and Durango in the
next month, to deliver information about electronic reuse.
Computer reuse is the first step towards electronic waste prevention
because of its efficient use of raw materials and reduction of
contaminants into the waste stream. COMEx’s Colorado Computer Reuse
Project will increase capacity for reuse of computers, peripherals,
and other electronics by providing information and opportunities for
electronics reuse across the state, with assistance from the
Environmental Protection Agency.

2. *************** Local Recycling Info *******************
RECYCLE PLASTIC BAGS AT ECOCYCLE
Beginning November 19, Boulder’s non-profit recycler EcoCycle will
accept plastic bags at their Center for Harder to Recycle Materials
(CHaRM). Only #4 plastic bags will be accepted (plastic grocery
sacks and newspaper bags), and they must be absolutely clean, dry,
and free of contamination. CHaRM is located at 5030 "old" Pearl
Street in Boulder, and is open Monday through Saturday 9 am - 4 pm.
In addition to plastic bags, CHaRM accepts computers and computer
monitors, cell phones, televisions, vcr’s, hard-back books and
manuals for recycling (there is a fee for some items). For more
information and directions, see
http://www.ecocycle.org/htrg/ctrhrdrecycle.cfm
LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO TAKE OTHER HARD-TO-RECYCLE ITEMS?
EcoCycle’s Guide to Hard-to-Recycle Materials, for Boulder County
and the surrounding area, is now on the web. Search for places to
take styrofoam, appliances, eyeglasses, and hundreds of other items
that can be reused or recycled instead of landfilled.

3. *************** Industry News *****************
On November 15, millions of people in the U.S. will learn about
recycling and make a commitment to increase their recycling
activities and to purchase more products made from recycled
materials. More than 800 recycling-related events are scheduled to
take place this Friday as part of the Sixth Annual America Recycles
Day. The America Recycles Day campaign educates Americans about the
economic, social, and environmental benefits of recycling and buying
recycled.
John Howard, the Federal Environmental Executive, has expressed the
Bush Administration’s support for America Recycles Day. "I am
pleased to join many others across the country in America Recycles
Day 2002. As President Bush stated earlier this year, ’Good
stewardship begins with the simplest of things. What may appear to
be a small act is really important: cleaning up a park, or
recycling, or encouraging people and showing people how to conserve
energy.’"
Last year, nearly one million Americans took the America Recycles
Day pledge. As an incentive to those who pledge this year to
increase their recycling activities and purchases of recycled
products, event organizers are offering several national prizes,
including five aluminum Trek 24-speed bicycles, and a $250 gift
certificate from Staples, Inc. The prizes will be awarded through
a random drawing of pledge cards, including those submitted
electronically.
Go to http://www.americarecyclesday.org/ to pledge on line. Pledges
must be submitted by November 20, 2002 to be eligible for the prize
drawing.
4. *************** Frightening Fact *****************
Landfills rank as the second highest source of greenhouse gas
emissions in the United States, after fossil fuel combustion.

by the White House Task Force on Recycling, 1998
5. *************** Glimmer of Hope ****************
Loyola Marymount University uses "Please Recycle" signs that
incorporate the quote,
"And so shines a good deed, in a weary world. - Wille Wonka".
Says Bill Stonecypher of LMU’s office of environmental control, "It
seems all students know and love this book and film, and I believe
the good feeling this recognition instantly brings has
single-handedly improved recycling rates in our residential
facilities this fall. Never underestimate the ’feel good’ factor
when encouraging people to recycle with printed materials."
6. *************** Get Involved / Upcoming Events***************
ONE SWEET WHIRLED CAMPAIGN Pledge to reduce greenhouse gases by
recycling, and get free ice cream! Recycling half of the aluminum
cans, glass bottles, plastic, cardboard and newspaper that you use
can reduce carbon dioxide by 2,400 pounds per year. Stop by the
University Memorial Center fountain area on Monday, November 18 and
Tuesday, November 19 for more information on easy actions to reduce
your impact, and get free Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. Members of the
One Sweet Whirled campaign to fight global warming, in partnership
with SaveOurEnvironment.org and the CU Environmental Center, will
visit the CU campus as part of a nation-wide university tour, giving
away ice cream and information about how to take actions to curb
global warming. See http://www.onesweetwhirled.org to pledge
on-line, and for more information.
