NEW RECYCLING PROCEDURES AND OPPORTUNITIES AT C.U.
CU’s Solid Waste Advisory Board and CU Recycling would like to thank you
for your past, present and future efforts in recycling. With your help,
the campus was able to recycle record amounts of materials in 1997-98.
The following includes new recycling procedures and opportunities on campus.
RECYCLING PROCEDURES
MAGAZINES:
A grant from the Boulder County Recycling & Composting Authority has made
a new magazine recycling program possible on the Boulder campus. New containers
for magazine collection will be placed this semester in 30 buildings on
campus. Look for announcement of locations soon.
TRANSPARENCIES, DISKETTES AND TYVEK ENVELOPES:
CU Mailing Services has offered a special campus box address for recycling.
All transparencies, diskettes and Tyvek envelopes should be sent to Campus
Box 209. To recycle transparencies, faculty and staff are asked to put
no more than 50 and no less than 10 transparencies per interdepartmental
envelope. Write "transparencies for recycling" on each envelope and send
through campus mail. To recycle diskettes, faculty and staff are asked
to put no more than 10 and no less than 5 rubberband-tied disks per interdepartmental
envelope. Write "diskettes for recycling" and send through campus mail.
To recycle Tyvek envelopes, fill interdepartmental envelopes with folded
Tyvek envelopes, write "Tyvek for recycling" , and send through campus
mail.
PRINTER CARTRIDGES:
CU Copying Services has offered four copy centers on campus for the collection
of printer cartridges. To recycle inkjet and laser cartridges, simply
bring them to special recycling containers at one of the following copy
centers:
Regent (basement)
UMC (first floor)
Stadium (Room 142)
Continuing Education
WOODEN PALLETS:
Used wooden pallets are collected from main campus loading docks on the
second Thursday of each month. Put the pallets out only a few days in
advance. Do not put pallets in the trash. Wood is a valuable commodity
and pallets in dumpsters damage campus trash trucks.
CARDBOARD BOXES:
Flattened, corrugated cardboard and brown paper bags can be stacked neatly
in small amounts next to your building’s central recycling locations or
at loading docks. Unflattened cardboard will not be collected. Large amounts
of cardboard should be dropped off at the campus’ Intermediate Processing
Facility on Stadium Drive, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
OPPORTUNITIES AT C.U.
JOIN THE RECYCLING E-MAIL LISTSERVER:
The listserver is a paper-conserving way for CU Recycling to communicate
new information about resource conservation and recycling. When you subscribe,
your name and e-mail address will not be made available to any other group
or used for any other purpose. You can join by sending an e-mail message
to listproc@lists.colorado.edu. In the message text, type: subscribe recycling-infolist
your full name
ADOPT-A-BUILDING:
You can really help out the recycling program by "adopting" a building
that you already go to on a regular basis. Volunteers replace old signs
and maintain recycling stations, recommend recycling improvements, hang
posters in the building, and keep in touch with the adopt-a-building coordinator.
Volunteers are trained on specifics, then given the flexibility to work
on their own time. Time commitment varies from two to four hours a month.
HOST IN-OFFICE TRAINING:
Invite CU Recycling to come to your next faculty or staff meeting. The
program can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as 45 minutes of great
information. It will include a slide show of the recycling program on
campus, a hands-on question and answer period, posters and materials for
the office, and free ceramic coffee mugs and recycling stickers.
HOST A LOBBY DISPLAY IN YOUR BUILDING:
CU Recycling has two free-standing displays available. One is a four foot
stack of newspapers with a sign describing it as equivalent to a 140-foot
Douglas fir tree. A second interpretive display is available with new
campus recycling information. The displays can be placed in your building
lobby for one to two weeks, and will be maintained and removed by recycling
staff. The host is responsible for getting the approval to place the displays
in their building lobby.
Subscribe to the CU Recycling Bulletin
The Recycling Bulletin is circulated via a closed list; only CU Recycling has access to the rest of the subscriber list. Subscribers' names and e-mail addresses are not available to any other group or used for any other purpose.
